The Lancet Neurology has today published details of a Chicago study involving 20 people with relapsing-remitting MS who received stem cell transplants. The results showed that the progression of the disease was halted and could potentially reverse the damage caused by MS.
Dr Richard Burt, one of the chief researchers in the study stated that while it is the first therapy to reverse neurological disability in MS, more research is needed on a larger scale to prove his findings conclusively.
MS Ireland is excited about the research and hopes that continued research will yield positive results in the future. Stem cell therapy is currently not a proven treatment for MS and patients are encouraged to consult their neurologist before deciding on any treatments.
