World Health Organisation highlights issue of dementia

The World Health Organisation has warned that cases of dementia are set to soar in the coming decades. Some 35.6 million people were living with dementia in 2010 but that figure is set to double to 65.7 million by 2030.

The WHO appealed for greater public awareness and support for dementia care. They point out that only 8 countries have national programmes to address dementia.

The Department of Health and Children have committted to developing a national dementia strategy for Ireland but progress has stalled.
