Psychiatrist
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who is concerned with the study and treatment of persons affected with emotional, cognitive and behavioural problems.
Emotional disturbance, such as depression and mood disturbances are common in people with MS and are usually seen more in people with advanced MS. It should be emphasised, however, that the intellectual deterioration in general is mild and usually only results in mild memory loss.
The most common reason for a person with MS to be referred to the psychiatric team is mood disturbance. The neurologist, in association with the multi-professional team, may refer the person to this specialist.
The person with MS will then be seen on a regular basis by this team and will often be put on maintenance medication that is reviewed at regular intervals. Input from a psychologist might also be required.
