MS Ireland is supporting an initiative by the European Multiple Sclerosis Platform (EMSP) to contact as many MEPs to sign up to a 'Written Declaration on Neurodegenerative Diseases in the Workplace'.
The wording of the direction is as follows:
1. Neurodegenerative diseases currently affect over nine million Europeans, and in many cases lead to disability or complete dependency; that figure will double or triple between now and 2050, thus increasing further the already heavy socio-economic burden
2. People in the early stages of neurodegenerative disease are keen to continue working and contribute to society.
3. Inadequate social protection leaves people with neurodegenerative diseases facing stigma, discrimination and limited opportunities on the job market
4. The Commission is invited to raise awareness of neurodegenerative diseases in order to encourage early interventions and redress stigma and discrimination
5. The Commission is called upon to make full use of available financial support and to oversee the application of Union social legislation so as to enable people with neurodegenerative diseases to remain in the workplace for as long as possible and to contribute to society, in line with the goals of the Europe 2020 strategy.
MS Ireland has contacted Irish MEPs requesting their support for this written declaration.
