Advocating for Neurology Services in Donegal

We are looking for your support for the following important Patients Deserve Better campaign led by the Neurological Alliance of Ireland (NAI), advocating for Neurology Services in Donegal.

As Donegal has the highest number of people living with Multiple Sclerosis in Ireland, approx. 362, we have been strongly advocating for a full time Neurology Service based in Letterkenny University Hospital for a number of years. We are hopeful that the upcoming Neurological Alliance of Ireland (NAI) campaign on 24th of June will be successful and we need your interest and help to make this happen. Therefore, we are inviting you to register to attend the online meeting on 24th June from 1pm – Registration details below.

About the Neurological Alliance of Ireland

The NAI is the national umbrella group for charities working with people with neurological conditions. Neurological conditions affect the brain and spinal cord and include many common conditions such as stroke, dementia, acquired brain injury, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease as well as rare neurological conditions. The NAI have launched a campaign calling for a Consultant Neurologist for five regional hospitals around the country, including Letterkenny University Hospital. More information about the campaign is available at www.patientsdeservebetter.ie

Flyer showing a map with Letterkenny University Hospital and Sligo University Hospital marked. It urges action for local neurology services, highlighting a 112km distance between hospitals.

The current visiting service from the Neurology department in Sligo University Hospital is completely inadequate to meet the needs of people throughout Donegal, leading to long waiting times to be seen in Letterkenny and forcing people with chronic neurological conditions to make frequent long journeys to Sligo, Galway or even Dublin to see a Consultant Neurologist.

National Model of Care for Neurology Services

The National Model of Care for Neurology services (2016) outlines that all Model three hospitals throughout Ireland, including Letterkenny University Hospital, should have a dedicated outpatient neurology service.

Join the Online Meeting

Join the online meeting at 1pm on Monday 24th June to hear directly from local patients from the area, as well as local clinicians, about the urgent need for a properly resourced dedicated neurology service for Letterkenny University Hospital.

You can register for the online event at https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_UBQEeGIxTBCysMSGN4oZBQ#/registration

We look forward to seeing you at this online event in support of your local constituents living with neurological conditions.
