Key Changes to the Grant
- Increased Grant Amounts
The grant now covers up to 100% of the cost of the adaptation work for those in the lowest income bracket. The maximum grant available has been raised to €40,000, or €20,000 for homes less than 12 months old. - Higher Income Limits
More households can now qualify, with the income threshold increased to a maximum of €75,000 per year. - Revised Means Test
Several forms of income and social welfare payments are no longer considered when calculating household income, making it easier to qualify. Excluded payments include:
- Child Benefit, Working Family Payment, Domiciliary Care Allowance
- Carer’s Allowance/Benefit (if for the person needing the grant)
- Fuel Allowance, Living Alone Allowance, Foster Care Allowance
Additionally, income disregards for household members under 18, students aged 18-23, and full-time carers have increased to €6,250 per person.
- Improved Coverage
The grant covers modifications like ramps, wheelchair access, accessible bathrooms, stairlifts, and fixed track hoists. Other necessary works deemed essential by the local authority are also included.
What Do These Changes Mean?
If your household income is less than €37,500, you may now qualify for full coverage of adaptation costs. The percentage of costs covered decreases as income rises, with no grant available for incomes exceeding €75,000.
These updates aim to make the grant more inclusive and accessible for those who need it most. Applications made before 1 December 2024 are subject to the old rules.
Contact your local authority for updated forms and detailed information on how to apply.
