MS Nurse Guide Launched

New guide for all nurses on caring for people with MS

On the 7th of September MS Ireland attended the launch of a new publication, Multiple Sclerosis Specialist Nursing in Ireland: A Guide to Best Practice (2nd Edition). The guide will support MS specialist nurses who are involved in the care of people with MS. An associated handbook was also launched for for non-specialist nurses who care for people with MS.

The guide and handbook was developed by the Irish Network of Multiple Sclerosis Nurses in partnership with the HSE National Nursing and Midwifery office. This is the second edition of the publication and has been updated with current evidence for nursing care and treatment of people with MS.

The working group who have produced the materials were:

Martina McKenna – CNS MS - St James’ Hospital

Valerie Joy Williams – CNS – MS – Beaumont Hospital

Marguerite Duggan – CNS MS - St Vincent’s University hospital

Rita Corry – Assistant professor/Research Fellow - TCD

Orla Kenny from St Vincent’s University Hospital and

Liz Roche – Interim Area Director – DML - ONMSD

Liz Roche spoke at the launch and told how the push to redevelop the guide came at an MS Ireland meeting held for nurses the year before. At the launch, Liz Roche noted “The publication and launch of these documents reflects the importance of developing an integrated approach to the work of all stakeholders in the care of people with MS throughout their journey in life and most importantly to working in partnership with the person themselves”.
